Changes in global and thalamic brain connectivity in LSD-induced… states of consciousness…

Despite its powerful effects on consciousness, human research on LSD neurobiology stalled in the late 1960s because of a narrow focus on the experiential effects of hallucinogenic drugs, combined with a lack of understanding of its effects on molecular signaling mechanisms in the brain.

However, renewed interest in the potentially beneficial clinical effects of psychedelics (Carhart-Harris et al., 2016a; Gasser et al., 2014; Griffiths et al., 2016) warrants a better understanding of their underlying neuropharmacology. Nevertheless, major knowledge gaps remain regarding LSD’s neurobiology in humans as well as its time-dependent receptor neuropharmacology. To address this critical gap, the current study aims to comprehensively map time-dependent pharmacological effects of LSD on neural functional connectivity in healthy human adults and compare them to the spatial expression profile of genes coding for receptors interacting with LSD.
